Category: Training - Core Training - Anatomy/Physiology
Date: January 30th 2024 2:00pm until 5:00pm
Location: School of Anatomy, 32 Southwell Street, BS2 8EJ in Training Room 1 and 2 BS2 8EJ
Physiology 3 – Regulation of Blood Volume and osmolarity, renal cast studies and acute kidney injury
This session will be held on Tuesday 23rd January 2024 and repeated on Tuesday 30th January 2024. Please only register to attend ONE session per subject.
Overview of Physiology Sessions
The sessions are designed to improve understanding of physiological and pathophysiological concepts as detailed below. They will consist of seminars, case study discussions, hands-on physiology demonstration and interactive Human Patient Simulator (HPS) demonstrations. The balance of activities in each of the four sessions will vary according to the topic being considered.
Curriculum
Physiology 3: Regulation of blood volume and osmolarity, renal case studies and acute kidney injury.
Topics covered:
-
Electrolyte and water balance
-
Starling forces across capillaries, glomerular filtration
-
Endocrine control of body fluid volume and osmolarity
-
Acute kidney injury (AKI)
Participants
Compulsory for all CT1s & (CT2's if you did not attend a session last year). Priority will be given to those who have not yet passed MRCS.
Availability
Each module for anatomy and physiology is normally run twice to allow choice for attendance. Please only book one option for each subject. Each module has places for a maximum of 20 trainees.
Registration
Via the School of Surgery website. Your details will be passed onto the University of Bristol (name, mobile and email address) for any supporting materials you may need in advance, and in the event of a late cancellation due to sickness.
Objective
Anatomy and Physiology teaching to support learning for ISCP curriculum and for MRCS examinations. Emphasis is given to continuing professional education rather than ‘coaching’ for the MRCS examinations.
Dates
4 anatomy modules and 4 physiology modules are delivered on Tuesdays, and it is advised that Core Trainees ensure that they combine anatomy and physiology teaching sessions where possible.
Study Leave
Anatomy and physiology teaching are linked by dates. Core Trainees are advised to take study leave for the whole day when attending both sessions.
Preparation
Trainees are expected to read up and study on the module topics before attendance in order to gain maximal educational benefit from the teaching.

Refreshments
Core trainees are advised to bring their own refreshments or to make their own arrangements for food and refreshments during the 1-hour gap between physiology and anatomy modules on Tuesdays at 13:00-14:00. There are numerous cafes and sandwich shops in the vicinity that are easily accessible during the short walk from the physiology venue to the anatomy venues.
Travel
No car-parking arrangements are available at the University of Bristol, and the surrounding areas are for ‘residents-only’.
There are NCP car parks available 10-15 minutes away by foot. Good bus and train links are available to Bristol and the University. Trainees are advised to plan their travel and if coming by car are advised to offer a lift to colleagues.
For those travelling from the south of M5and coming off the motorway at Portbury, the Portbury Park and Ride or train service may be an option. Similarly, for those coming from the North, Exit M32 and follow ring road around to Brislington and use Park and Ride service. This stops by Primark on the Horsefair and is then only a short walk up the hill to the University.

Attendance outcomes
A record of attendance will be kept by the University and passed onto NHS England. Attendance details are provided to your Programme Directors and will be assessed at the yearly ARCPs. Please ensure that you sign in on the day.
Trainee feedback
Trainees will be asked to provide anonymised online feedback after attendance on each module. This is important for the University and the School of Surgery to ensure that the standards of delivery and content of the teaching is maximized for future core trainees.
Non-attendance
If you book a module and subsequently find you cannot attend, please email SEVSurgerySchool.sw@hee.nhs.uk. Failure to attend a module requires a trainee to complete an explanation form which is available from SEVSurgerySchool.sw@hee.nhs.uk and is returnable by email if we are not advised in advance.
