Human Factors Training--Core Surgical Trainees

Location: Bristol Medical Simulation Centre, Post Graduate Education Centre, Bristol Royal Infirmary BS2 8AE
For all Core Trainees (both Core Surgery-General and Core T&O). Of note: The expectation is all Core Trainees will have taken a Human Factors course by the end of their Core Training. (The next course date will be 09.11.2016.)
Participants
Compulsory for all Core Trainees (both Core Surgery-General and Core T&O) to attend a Human Factors Training Day by the end of their core training.
Availability
Maximum of 18 places.
Objective
An introduction to ‘Human Factors/Non-technical Skills’:
- leadership
- team working
- error avoidance
- communication skills
- time management and prioritisation
- decision making
- situation awareness
- working under pressure
- dealing with uncertainty
It employs highly sophisticated role-play with the use of world-class simulation techniques directly tailored to the field of surgery.
Travel
No car-parking arrangements are available at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. There are NCP car parks available 10 minutes away by foot. Good bus and train links are available to Bristol and the BRI. Trainees are advised to plan their travel and if coming by car are advised to offer a lift to colleagues.
Attendance outcomes
A record of attendance will be kept by the Deanery. Attendance details are provided to your Programme Directors and will be assessed at the yearly ARCPs. Certificates will be provided for each module to trainees, who attend, for their portfolio.
Trainee feedback
Trainees will be asked to provide anonymised feedback on each module. This is important for the School of Surgery to ensure that the standards of delivery and content of the teaching is maximized for Severn School of Surgery core trainees in the future.
Non-attendance
Failure to attend this course requires a trainee to complete an explanation form which is available on-line at the School website and is returnable to Chad Elliott (Chad.Elliott@southwest.nhs.uk) at the School of Surgery.
